Thyroid Surgery

The thyroid gland is located in the neck below the larynx and produces a hormone, that regulates heart rate, sweating and other functions of the metabolism. Millions of Americans suffer from thyroid problems. Our doctors at Asheville Ear Nose & Throat help patients with thyroid nodules and thyroid cancer by providing effective surgical treatment.

Abnormal growths on the thyroid, known as nodules, are more common in women and can vary in size. For the most part, thyroid nodules do not cause symptoms or require treatment. In some cases, these nodules can lead to hyperthyroidism, thyroid cancer or an enlarged thyroid (goiter). Thyroid problems our doctors offer treatment for include:

  • Thyroid Nodules
  • Thyroid Enlargement
  • Thyroid Cancer
  • Parathyroid Diseases

Thyroid Cancer

Thyroid cancer is one of the most common cancers found in women. While many patients have no symptoms, some reported symptoms include a lump in the neck, trouble swallowing and changes in the voice. Diagnosis of thyroid cancer includes a physical exam, ultrasound and biopsy. If the biopsy confirms malignancy, or is indeterminate, surgery is usually recommended to remove the thyroid gland.
